As part of our Job Insights, employees are regularly interviewed about their professional tasks and challenges and published here in our Smartlane career blog. Would you like to know what everyday working life is like in different areas? We asked Arun, QA Automation Engineer at Smartlane, about his day-to-day work, his move with family from India and what Smartlane is all about for him.
Why did you apply to Smartlane?
Arun: The product and the technology at Smartlane attracted me to apply for this job. I was very much convinced that Smartlane Transport Intelligence carries a huge potential. In addition, the technology stack at Smartlane also seemed quite interesting. The interview conversations further made me confident of my decision to apply at Smartlane.
How was your start and relocation process with Smartlane?
Arun: I was hired when I was in India and inspite of having a long wait time for visa appointment, Smartlane was receptive to the situation by adjusting the start date accordingly. Later, the onboarding went quite smoothly, but a long list of other tasks were waiting for me and my family after arriving in Germany. But whether it was finding an apartment, residence registration, contacting the school for kids, or even buying the furniture for the house, the team was always there to help me. In fact, my manager also accompanied me to a couple of places to help me personally.
What makes your job special?
Arun: There are two things which really make my job special: The team and the exciting tasks we are working on. I am working with some of the best talents in the software industry, where we are constantly working together to create the best product in the logistics industry. It is rather quite a flat hierarchy where I am very well connected with all the stakeholders, including the founders, and I am loving this journey where I am getting a chance to establish the QA process from the very scratch here.
What does a typical working day look like for you and what are the biggest challenges?
Arun: A typical working day for me would be a mix of any of these – me working on my tasks/deliveries, struggling with issues, exploring new technology/github/stackoverflow and likewise, communicating over slack messages, meetings etc. Friday, however, is an exception where we don’t have meetings and I can concentrate only on my tasks. Plus, we have regular update meetings from all the departments, and some ‘get-together’ in between our regular schedule to keep us refreshed and connected.
How do you combine work, family and free time at Smartlane?
Arun: Smartlane gives enough flexibility to manage both the lives. Combining work and family has not been a problem at Smartlane so far. I can choose to work from the office or home (or even hybrid mode) based on my situation. In my case, it is hybrid mode, as it gives me the flexibility and a chance to keep connected with the team as well.
